[Writing Meme] Short Answer Day!
Oct. 24th, 2010 11:49 am2. How many characters do you have? Do you prefer males or females?
I have personally no idea how many characters I have. Nejiverse has 20ish. Finneganverse has around 10. Dragonverse has around 20...? Never bothered to keep track. Reaperverse has maybe 10? Aleisterverse...another 10....PseudoFF7verse....you know what sod this, this is too difficult. =__=;; We haven't even counted the abandoned stories.
However, I can tell you that since 80% of my protagonists are males, I indeed favour writing males.
People always think that if you're a woman, you'll write women better - not the case. I once told
carneaglariel that when I write female characters I feel like part of me is either projected onto them or I feel they reflect so much of me I get uncomfortable. While one's personality should always show, it can be a hindrance to designing characters. Imagine I make a female character who reminds me of me. Then (just saying) the story gets her raped. I start feeling really bad because it feels like *I'm* the one really getting raped. Emotion clouds judgement, and now I would want the story to go in a direction that favours her. It leads to a sort of Mary Sue which I want to avoid. There's also a huge stigma with female characters - male characters can be angsty and bitchy and emo but god forbid a woman actually does all that as it would be stereotyping. One story has an unbalanced gender ratio of 4 women:2 men because it was during my Sailormoon kick but it's a rarity and I'm finally working out their personalities beyond "is the heroine" "is conflicted" "is brick"....10+ years later.
It does bum me out when I can't kit my protagonists in nice feminine designs, but that's what female side characters are for! 8D
Also, fashion creativity goes a long long way. <3
