This more interesting than NaNo, I tell you!
12. In what story did you feel you did the best job of worldbuilding? Any side-notes on it you'd like to share?
Definiteily Dragonverse. There aren't many landmarks, a few kingdoms that grew into empires and then nations, a broken empire, deserted kingdoms, yeah the maps are terribly hazy, but I like the races in it and how they interact with each other. While there are 5 species of dragons not all of them have the same motivations and interactions and the deities looking over the world have their own mythos. It's a pretty brutal world that's marked by different figureheads throughout history, such as one who began the dubious act of making pacts with their malicious amoral gods, one who brought airships to the fore and one who created necromancers.
My particular favourite is a rather brief description about Green Dragons (or rather the Green Dragons in that particular region) where they consider anybody who ventures out of their home ground a heretic and they don't even accept their remains if they die outside, and any dragonling born disabled is interpreted as paying for the sin of the heretic so they have prayer rituals to apologize to the gods for not obeying them. Then they feel really guilty for that dragonling and it gets raised by the whole village instead. Outsiders don't even get to step foot in the village and sleep outside instead. There's kings and their empires and...stuff. Yeah. I don't know what other notes I can share on that unless you ask me questions about it. >_>
13. What's your favorite culture to write, fictional or not?
Sometimes I think our culture is rather cool because there's so many things to make fun of. Then there's Victorian culture because everyone loves coats and floofy skirts. There's the other floofy skirt culture but those have men in powdered wigs so you can't play much with the male designs.
...Let's just stick to saying I like writing about any culture with floofy skirts, yeah?
14. How do you map out locations, if needed? Do you have any to show us?
1. Draw squiggly boxes
2. Close eyes, randomly hit spots. Where pencil hits, it is now a place.
3. ????
4. PROFIT!
I have only one map, it's not drawn by me, and the story has changed so much it needs a tectonic plate shift. So no, you're not seeing it.
15. Midway question! Tell us about a writer you admire, whether professional or not!
A long time ago when there were no such thing as internet memes and everyone loved Gensoumaden Saiyuki,
lady_sb wrote the best sexy fanfiction. By sexy I meant she would write about Gojyo & Sanzo desecrating a pool table and it was the HOTTEST YAOI EVER. I remember when she admitted she wrote that fic and
flat_foot and I went NO WAYYYY DDDDD8 She still writes sexy fanfiction mind you, we just don't share the same fandoms anymore. I do admire her writing if only because she can do the one thing I can't write well AT ALL.
There was also this girl I knew waaaay back in 1998 who was the only other Malaysian sailormoon fan on alt.fan.sailor-moon and she was a pretty awesome writer too. She introduced me to parody-writing way back then and I haven't found someone who writes "14 X Characters In A Van With Fuuma Driving" as fantastically as her. This was stuff from TEN YEARS AGO and I'm still laughing - I can only imagine if she was still writing she'd be AMAZING. Jo-chan, where are youuuuu ><
I have no professional writers I really admire - Murakami is too impulsive, Amy Tan writes the same story 500 times, I never want Tolkien as my history teacher, Pratchett gets draggy, Anne Rice got preachy, Gaiman is overrated....and I only read two Adrian Mole books, so I don't know if Susan Townsend is credible enough to admire. I do recommend everyone go out and read the first 2 Adrian Mole books though!
